What is the purpose of knowledge sharing – for you? And for the people and organisations you work with? We believe any effort to share knowledge in an organisation should dovetail with organisational objectives, and as such knowledge management should always be considered a critical element, linked to strategic planning and M&E.

Working with organisations in the international development sector, we became increasingly aware that we needed a framework for joining the dots, to connect the planners with the evaluators, the strategic thinkers with operations and human resources, the researchers with the policy makers. And for closing gaps between implementors and target audiences/populations.

One recurring question is “How to measure?” Knowledge management itself is an intangible and diffuse thing.  It is an abstract. We hear that Knowledge Management initiatives impact ‘diverse, widespread, changing groups and programmes.’  From experience, we collectively ascertain that Knowledge Management can hardly be seen as a discreet, contained function, with neat goals and outputs.  As our stakeholders contest ‘it sits nowhere and everywhere – it touches everything.’

In this short, interactive 90-minute event we will share our experiences as well as KM practices from a range of development organisations, and discuss how these can support M&E functions.

Silvia Capezzuoli works as a senior consultant with IMA InternationalIMA International provides Knowledge Management training and consultancy to help people see how good Knowledge Management can indeed join the dots. Silvia is a social development specialist and facilitator with over twenty five years of experience in international development. Her work spans facilitation, training, mentoring, programme management, evaluation and research across more than 20 countries. Silvia has held operational posts in INGOs, training consultancies, academia, and the private sector, working in multi-lingual contexts with diverse partners. She has lived and worked in South East Asia, East Africa, South Africa and the UK. She holds an MA in Gender and Development (Institute of Development Studies, UK), has lectured for the University of Sussex and interpreted for refugees and migrants for Brighton and Hove council. Silvia favours Participatory Learning and Action, and experiential learning processes. She has a particular interest in how individuals and organisations learn, embracing and promoting knowledge sharing as an integral part of her work. She has been an active Trainer of Trainers’ facilitator for the EAFM Consortium since 2013. She has published papers with ACORD on gender and conflict, and more recently she has published on knowledge management with KM4D Journal.

Ruth Jolly works as a senior consultant with IMA International. She is a facilitator, organisational development (OD) specialist and qualified coach – working with partners, staff and boards of international development, human rights and environment organisations. Ruth has worked in this sector for 25 years’ and has been a consultant with IMA International since June 2014. Ruth has held operational and senior posts in grass-roots organisations, INGOs, training and research consultancies, UN agencies and advocacy coalitions. She was Head of Learning at VSO and led the Learning and Development function at Amnesty International. She has worked and lived in East Africa, South East Asia and the UK. In facilitation, training and 1-1 coaching, Ruth is dedicated to providing input and space to develop those ‘inner skills’ which serve managers and leaders in challenging contexts. Ruth holds an MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights (London University School of Advanced Studies) has lectured on the links between development and human rights and tutored on Wye College’s Masters programme on NGO Management. She has published, under INTRAC, papers on NGO management in conflict and NGO capacity building support organisations.
